How To Use This Site
This site was created to help people degoogle their lives step-by-step. Wherever you are on the degoogling journey, this site offers the resources you need to continue towards your goal.
To help you find the content that is most relevant to your needs, the posts on this site are categorized according to three βcommitment levelsβ of degoogling as well as into three types of posts.
Levels of Degoogling
Not every degoogling task is as easy or straightforward as the other. Some changes can be made quickly, some take months. To help you quickly recognize the type of commitment a task involves, I use the following three labels:
Light π’
Immediate impact, minimal disruption
These tasks can be done in a day.
There are no costs involved and the impact to convenience is practically zero.
Commitment level: Same day setup, invisible changes, set it and forget it
Core π‘
The sweet spot for most users β balancing convenience with strong degoogling progress
These tasks are more involved and often require some research and weighing of options.
They can be done without incurring any costs β though some may prefer paying for better features (e.g. for more storage).
This level does not involve any hardware or OS changes.
Commitment level: Weekend projects, some learning/troubleshooting/adjusting required
Pro π΄
Degoogle all the things
More of a life-long process/lifestyle than a project with a set deadline.
These changes will impact your relationship to your devices as well as to other people (as you are no longer available on the usual channels).
Anything that requires a monetary investment (e.g. new hardware or subscriptions), starting from scratch (OS changes) or above average effort/commitment goes here.
Commitment level: Ongoing commitment, lifestyle choice, major shift in tech workflows
Content Types
The posts on this site fall into three main categories:
Articles
Articles are like traditional blog posts. I talk about the βwhyβ of degoogling, my personal journey and various topics surrounding privacy, Big Data and the like.
Guides
Guides are just what you would expect β step-by-step advice on how to actually get degoogled. Each guide covers a specific task, such as moving your email out of Gmail or changing your search engine.
Alternatives
The articles in this section help you decide what apps can best replace their Big Data counterparts. Want to know what options exist for replacing Chrome? Go to the Browser Alternatives page and youβll be off and running.

Some Final Notes
Each level of degoogling has (or will have) its own checklist of the tasks involved that provides a brief overview of the various tasks. This isnβt an exam, so there is no rule that you have to complete all the tasks or do them in order. Feel free to chart your own course.
